Gordon Clark, Photographer

Project Title:
Transitions in South Africa

Project Category:
Book Design and Publishing

Beautiful photographs are even more compelling given the proper setting. In this case, a book designed to both enhance the subject material as well as act as a package to increase the value of its contents.

Working closely with client/photographer Gordon Clark and the South African Consulate General, Artisan designed and produced a book to house Clark’s photographic essay, “Transitions In South Africa”, the proceeds of which were destined to benefit the very people whom it documented. The challenge was to design and produce this as inexpensively as possible, as virtually all project funds were earmarked to help the beneficiaries. But it needed to be striking as well, as the more revenue it generated the more the tribes would benefit.

To minimize budget expenses, we took on the responsibilities of complete production management, overseeing proofreading, editing and coordination of both the designer and the printer. The results are this book which has been featured with our client on NPR and at a special reception at the Museum of Tolerance.
